Mr. Grouper is the Bubble Guppies' teacher. He is friendly, funny, and full of information.
Mr. Grouper genuinely respects the Guppies' intelligence, encourages their curiosities, and nurtures their imaginations. He sees every day as an opportunity for discovery. He knows how to be silly and play along with the Guppies, joining in their pretend play in the classroom and outside.
From Seasons 1-4, he would always end the school day with a field trip and/or a celebration of the episode's topic. Overall, Mr. Grouper is a very good friend to all the Guppies.
One notable feature with Mr. Grouper (most prominent in Seasons 1-4) is that he can also change his natural orange into a wide variety of different colors like red, yellow, green, blue, purple and pink. He can even change himself into a wide variety of different patterns, such as when he pretended to be a cow in both Have a Cow! and Sheep Doggy! respectively, and when he pretended to be a big bumblebee in The Bubble Bee-athalon!. Many of Mr. Grouper's color-changing moments can occur whilst giving info to the Guppies (such as when he offered to be the traffic light in The Crayon Prix! to teach Molly and Deema what the colors mean), or even in the Guppies' pretend play (such as when he pretended to be a tour bus in Super Shrimptennial Celebration! to give Molly, Goby and Nonny a pretend Big Bubble City tour).

Mr. Grouper has appeared in every episode of Bubble Guppies.
His first appearance was in Call a Clambulance!.
- Mr. Grouper was seen in some story segements in episodes like Bubble Puppy! and The Super Ballet Bowl.
- He appeared in the story in Bubble Puppy!.
- He was the Oyster Bunny in The Oyster Bunny!.
- In Temple of the Lost Puppy!, he was the guardian of the lost puppies and in Space Guppies!, he was President Fuzzyfish.
- In Season 5, he can be seen in several story segments.
His appearance before the original series, in the pilot, was very different. His skin was a darker orange color and had visible thick lips around his mouth, and was the only character not seen to have any teeth.
