- Empanadas are like fried or baked turnovers that come from Argentina, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, and the rest of Spanish-speaking countries where it stuffed with yummy sweet or savory fillings such as beef, chicken, cheese, guava and cheese, shrimp, pizza, etc. Another word for empanada in the state of New York is called a pastelito. It is served not only for lunch, but also for Thanksgiving, Nochebuena (which means Christmas Eve in Spanish and is celebrated on December 24th), New Year’s Eve, festivals, bodegas, restaurants, and Hispanic special occasions in the United States like birthday parties, baby showers, bridal showers, weddings, and Quinceañeras.
