Plot
In the mythological land of Bubbledom, the wicked Night Wizard has taken the magical Ring of the Sun! Someone needs to save the daytime! Will Molly and Gil return the Ring to the Sun King, or will it be nighttime in Bubbledom forever?
Summary
Part 1
The special opens with a view of a wooden table displaying a map of the magical land of Bubbledom. During the introduction, the narrator explains that in Bubbledom, there has always been a cycle of day and night. In a golden castle on the shores of the Western Sea, lives the Sun King, a very royal monarch whose job is to make the sun rise every morning using his magical ring: The Ring of the Sun. However, far away in the mountains of Bubbledom, resides an evil Night Wizard who dislikes daylight. One early morning, before the sun's rise, he devises a plan to steal the Sun King's ring and make it nighttime in Bubbledom forever.
The scene transitions from the castle to a forest, where Molly and Gil, two slushy sellers, are carrying two crates of lemons toward their slushy stand. When a lemon tumbles from Gil's crate, Bubble Puppy retrieves it and places it back. The three friends arrive at the stand just as the title card appears, signaling the official start of the story.
The story starts with the Night Wizard telling his pet possum, Raoul, that it will almost be morning again. He even says the "dreaded sun" will soon be shining all over Bubbledom all day long, then turns to the viewer, remarking that he doesn't like the daytime at all. He then starts singing "Night Night!" with his army.
The song then cuts to Mr. Grouper in the castle, then to Molly, Gil, and Bubble Puppy at the slushy stand. It then cuts back to the Sun King's castle. After Mr. Grouper sings "Each day's a new beginning," he uses the ring and shines it on the sun, making it rise into the sky. When the sun is up, Raoul falls asleep because he's a nighttime animal.
At the end of the song, the Night Wizard's army enters the castle just as the Sun King says, "Good morning." The Night Army's leader then demands the ring from the Sun King. Before the Sun King can respond, the Night Army's leader and the rest of the soldiers use their staffs to cast a spell, putting the Sun King and his soldiers to sleep. This gives them the opportunity to steal the ring by slipping it off his finger. They then place it in a chest and set off back to the Night Wizard's castle. With the ring taken, the Sun King doesn't have the power to make the sun rise, and it might be nighttime in Bubbledom forever.
On their long trip back to the castle, the soldiers encountered a very odd sight in the distance. Gil was shouting for customers to come get lemon bubble slushies. When Molly asked if there were any customers, Gil said there weren't any. He then tried again, looking in both directions, but nothing seemed to work. While they were waiting for customers, Molly explained to Gil that someone would pass by, and they just had to be patient. This time, they both shouted "Bubble Slushies!" very loudly. Their chance was about to slip away again when Gil spotted something in the distance. They both knew it was customers coming along the path to the slushy stand. When they both shouted "Customers!" in excitement, Molly and Gil quickly got ready to sell the slushies. But because they were so excited, they rushed and crashed into each other. What Molly and Gil didn't realize was that the "customers" were the Night Wizard's army.
Molly and Gil then rushed up with a slushy and confronted the soldiers. They greeted them with a "good afternoon, marching lobsters" and offered them a slushy to try. The leader told the slushy sellers to move out of the way, but the two sellers wouldn't give up and kept trying. The leader once again told them to get out of the way. They didn't get far when Gil stopped them again and offered another slushy. Just as the slushy sellers were about to give up, one of the soldiers said he was a little thirsty, but the leader rejected his request and ordered them to get the "you-know-what" (the sun ring) to the "you-know-who." When one soldier mentioned the ring, the leader quickly shushed him and told the sellers to move out of their way. But Molly and Gil ignored them and showed their teeth, motivating the soldiers to try a lemon bubble slushy. The leader then gave up and decided to take the offer, trying one along with his soldiers.
Molly and Gil started working on the slushies, and the soldiers were all lined up to buy one. Meanwhile, Bubble Puppy was sniffing next to the leader's horse. When the horse turned its head, Bubble Puppy got frightened and ran off. Not looking where he was going, Bubble Puppy ran into a chest, which opened. He didn't know what was inside, but when he looked again, Bubble Puppy realized it was the Sun King's sun ring. When nobody was looking, Bubble Puppy got too close to the ring, and it got stuck around his neck.
While the Night Wizard's army enjoyed their slushies, the leader's cell phone rang. He answered it and found that the Night Wizard himself had called to find out where they were. The leader explained that they were taking a break to enjoy some lemon bubble slushies. The wizard asked where the ring was, and the leader assured him everything was fine, telling one of his soldiers to check on the ring.
So, one of the soldiers scurried to the chest where the ring was kept, but when he opened it, the ring had disappeared. The soldiers wondered who had taken the ring and then stared at the slushy sellers. When Gil asked if the soldiers would like a refill, they were confronted and demanded to hand over the ring. Molly asked, "What ring?" and said they didn't have a ring with them.
Suddenly, they heard Bubble Puppy and saw that the ring was around his neck. Gil then swam up and said the ring didn't belong to him, but he had trouble getting it off Bubble Puppy's neck and wondered how the situation could be resolved.
Then the leader of the Night Wizard's army's phone rang again, revealing it was the Night Wizard, asking where the ring was. He explained that the ring was around the puppy's neck and wouldn't come off. The Night Wizard demanded the leader and the rest of his army bring the puppy and the ring to his castle.
Within a few seconds, the leader told the soldiers to seize Molly, Gil, and Bubble Puppy. Upon hearing this, the three ran away as fast as they could, trying to escape. Without wasting any time, the soldiers grabbed their staffs and started firing them, attempting to make Molly, Gil, and Bubble Puppy fall asleep. Gil then grabbed a box of lemons and threw them, making the army slip and slide, slowing them down.
Then, Molly, Gil, and Bubble Puppy ran away through the forest to escape them. While chasing them, the army continued, only to find they had disappeared. They looked all around, but Molly, Gil, and Bubble Puppy were hidden in a tree, looking down and trying not to be spotted. Gil then had a perfect idea: he threw a lemon in the opposite direction, making the army think they were very close to them, and so they went away. After the soldiers left, the trio descended from the tree and wondered why they wanted Bubble Puppy, realizing it was only because of the ring around his neck. After that, the three went far away through the forest.
Back at the castle, the Night Wizard was about to sit down when he discovered Raoul fast asleep in his chair. He nudged Raoul, explaining that it was an important day and he needed him to pay attention. But still, the Night Wizard couldn't wake Raoul up.
The wizard sighed and sat in another chair, looking at his computer, trying to locate his army. He eventually found them in the middle of the forest. The Night Wizard called the leader of his army and, for the third time, asked about finding the ring. The leader replied that they were still working on it and hadn't found it yet.
Frustrated, the Night Wizard pressed him about why the ring hadn't been found. The leader suddenly remembered the puppy with the ring around his neck. One of the soldiers cut in, adding, "and two kids!" This shocked the Night Wizard, who immediately demanded to know about the "two kids." He then asked for their location, but the leader wasn't sure.
The wizard then tried again to wake up Raoul, but he remained fast asleep. He looked through his telescope and spotted Molly, Gil, and Bubble Puppy walking through the forest. Just then, the wizard's phone rang. It was the leader, who started to explain they had been cut off, but the wizard quickly interrupted, exclaiming that the kids are getting away and heading for the Flutter Guppies realm!
Molly, Gil, and Bubble Puppy entered a new, unfamiliar part of the forest. Molly worried they're lost, but Gil pointed out that at least they escaped the soldiers. Bubble Puppy chased two butterflies, one blue and one purple, until they vanished into the bushes. He then spotted something else in the bushes, and Gil came over, asking what was wrong. Molly warns Gil to be careful, explaining that wild creatures could be in the forest. Gil calmed Bubble Puppy, assuring him there was nothing there, but when he looked through the bushes, a deer popped out and startled Bubble Puppy. Then, Gil ran into a raccoon, then a rabbit, then a squirrel, but they stopped when he saw a tiny ladybug on a rock, who went on and said "boo," making Gil scared again. He then ran up to Molly and Bubble Puppy. Just then, all five furious animals surrounded the trio, and Gil asked, "Now what do we do?"
Suddenly, out of nowhere, lots of blue and purple butterflies flew over and started to comfort the animals, telling them to calm down. The butterflies eventually turned into guppies (Oona and Deema) who greeted them and told Molly, Gil, and Bubble Puppy to please forgive their animal friends, saying that they mean no harm. Gil asked, "Who—who are you?" and they replied, "We are the Flutter Guppies!" and then swam off. Molly and Gil softly echoed, "The Flutter Guppies?" Then, they sang the Flutter Guppies Realm Song.
After the song, The Blue Flutter Guppy, curious about their visitors, asked what brought them to their realm. Gil, unsure of the term, questioned what a "realm" was. The Blue Flutter Guppy, eager to understand, sought clarification. Just as the concept was being explained, the Under Guppy unexpectedly appeared, providing a comprehensive definition of a realm. Surprised, the Blue Flutter Guppy wondered who had spoken.
Suddenly, the Purple Flutter Guppy gasped, urging the Blue Flutter Guppy to look at Bubble Puppy. Recognizing the significance of the "ring of the sun" around Bubble Puppy's neck, they realized it belonged to the Sun King. Worried about the dire effects of the ring not returning to the Sun King before sunset, they knew they had to act fast.
The Flutter Guppies decided to follow Molly, Gil, and Bubble Puppy to assure the ring's safe return. As they prepared to leave, a squirrel chittered a warning. The Blue Flutter Guppy, understanding the squirrel's message, told the others that the Night Wizard's soldiers were coming. They hastily left, selecting a mountain route to avoid detection.
The Blue Flutter Guppy then said, "The mountains?" in a worried voice because that was the realm of the Snow Guppy. So they all continued on their quest to the Snow Guppy Realm.
The five fearless adventurers finally reached the Snow Guppy Realm, and the Blue Flutter Guppy asked if it was alright to pass through the realm. The Purple Flutter Guppy agreed and decided to call him on her phone. But there was one problem: there was no signal, so they tried again later. While they were walking through the snow, everyone saw different snow sculptures, like a bunny and a kitty. Gil wondered where Bubble Puppy was, so he decided to go and find him. He eventually found him by a polar bear sculpture. Gil told Bubble Puppy that it wasn't really a bear; it was just made of snow. When Gil touched the nose, all of the snow fell off, and Bubble Puppy got frightened, and so did Gil, and they both ran as fast as they could. They ran past the girls, who decided to follow them. They all ran through a snow hill and out the other side to a dead end with nowhere else to run. The Blue Flutter Guppy decided that it was time to call the Snow Guppy again, so the Purple Flutter Guppy pulled out her phone and called him. Then, the polar bear's phone rang, and he answered it. The Purple Flutter Guppy asked if they could speak to the Snow Guppy. When the polar bear turned around and looked at everyone, he transformed into the Snow Guppy. Then, he started to sing the Snow Guppy Realm Song.
After the song, the Snow Guppy asked what the group was doing in the realm. Molly explained that they're on a quest to reach the Sun King's castle. The Snow Guppy then asked what a "quest" is. Just then, the Under Guppy appeared again, defined "quest," and then disappeared. The Blue Flutter Guppy once again wondered aloud who had spoken.
The Snow Guppy then asked why they were traveling all the way to see the Sun King. He soon noticed the ring around Bubble Puppy's neck, and the guppies hypothesized that the Night Wizard must've done something to the Sun King to steal it. However, the Snow Guppy decided to find a way down the mountain and join them on their quest to the Sun King's castle to return the ring.
Meanwhile, the Night Wizard was spying on the guppies, trying to find them. He discovered they were going over the mountains and then saw his soldiers heading in the wrong direction, so he decided to call their leader. Soon, the leader answered his phone, assuring the Wizard they were getting closer. However, the Night Wizard told him he knew exactly where they were and urged him to listen carefully because he had a plan, instructing the soldiers to be ready at the bottom of the mountains.
Part 2[]
Molly, Gil, Bubble Puppy, the Snow Guppy, and the Flutter Guppies journeyed through the mountains toward the Under Guppy's realm. Everyone except Gil looked down at the steep slopes. They whispered to avoid any loud sounds that might start an avalanche. Suddenly, the Under Guppy showed up behind them again. It explained what an avalanche was before disappearing. The Snow Guppy then reminds everyone to stay quiet.
At that moment, they heard Gil shouting as he tried to catch his echo. The others tried to tell him to be quiet, but he didn’t listen and accidentally started an avalanche. "Avalanche!" shouted everyone as they rushed to escape, hurrying down the mountain as quickly as they could. The Flutter Guppies turned into butterflies to fly down faster, and the Snow Guppy changed into a polar bear to give Molly, Gil, and Bubble Puppy a ride down.
At the bottom, the leader of the Night Wizard's army spotted the friends coming down with his binoculars. He ordered the soldiers to prepare the bubble bites. After safely escaping the avalanche, the friends reached the bottom of the mountain. The butterflies changed back into the Flutter Guppies, and everyone laughed as Gil said, "That was awesome!" The Snow Guppy noted they're almost at the castle and turned back into his usual form. However, the Purple Flutter Guppy warned, "The sun will be down in only a few hours," and said they need to keep moving. With that, they continued on to the Sun King's castle.
During the journey, Gil and Bubble Puppy looked down into a ravine and wondered what lay below. The Snow Guppy said, "That is the realm of the Under Guppy." Then, Bubble Puppy wandered off while the girls peeked down as well. Gil questioned who the Under Guppy is, and the Snow Guppy replied, "Nobody knows." He explained that the Under Guppy has never been seen, but resides down there in the darkness. After that, everyone continued on their quest.
While exploring alone, Bubble Puppy found a trail of bubble bites on a bridge. He couldn't resist and ate them all, only to be surrounded by four Night Wizard soldiers. The leader, holding a box of bubble bites, tried to entice him closer. Cornered and frightened, Bubble Puppy had nowhere to escape. Meanwhile, Molly, Gil, the Snow Guppy, and the Flutter Guppies followed the path, with their destination finally in sight—the Sun King’s castle!
Gil assured Bubble Puppy that the castle was just ahead. But when he turned around, he realized Bubble Puppy is gone and started calling for him. Soon, they heard his barking and hurried to find him. As they searched, the Purple Flutter Guppy spotted Bubble Puppy captive on the other side of the bridge, held by the Night Wizard's soldiers.
Shocked, the five friends fearlessly approached the army, and Gil ordered them to release Bubble Puppy. Just then, the army tried to get them out of the way, but the Snow Guppy stepped forward and shouted, "You shall not pass!" He then used his staff to create an ice trail across the bridge and froze one of the soldiers in an ice cube. The soldier shivered, exclaiming, "I'm cold!"
With his staff, the leader of the Night Wizard's army shattered the bridge. Luckily, Molly and Gil dodged the strike and quickly moved out of the way. Then, the leader shot his staff behind the two friends and in front of the Snow Guppy and the Flutter Guppies, leaving only the middle part of the bridge intact. Gil told Bubble Puppy to get to the castle before the sun went down. Just then, the ring shone so brightly that it made the soldiers close their eyes tightly. Bubble Puppy was free and hurried to the castle as fast as he could, with the soldiers right on his tail. Then, Gil and Molly realized that the middle part of the bridge was breaking. A few seconds later, the bridge broke, and the two fell down into the ravine, leaving the rest of the group shocked. During the fall, Molly and Gil bounced on six mushrooms before landing in a small puddle at the very bottom. Now, Molly and Gil were underground and continued their journey through a dark and dismal cavern. Meanwhile, Bubble Puppy was trying to get away from the soldiers and saw that he wasn't far from the castle. While Bubble Puppy took the left trail, the soldiers took the right trail, and the Night Wizard saw that they were heading the wrong way again. The Wizard then decided he was going to go to the castle himself, carrying a sleepy Raoul with him.
In the cavern, Molly and Gil were wondering if they could find a way out, but they didn't notice that the Under Guppy was following them. Gil thought that they were outside and could see the "stars," but Molly wasn't so sure and knew it couldn't be nighttime yet. She then realized that they weren't stars. Then, a mysterious voice could be heard, and the Under Guppy appeared and said that they were bats. Gil then screamed and was told to be quiet. A lot of bats woke up and started to chase the trio through the cave. Eventually, Molly and Gil hid behind some stalagmites while the Under Guppy calmed his bats down and explained that they didn't mean to wake them and that it wasn't nighttime yet. And with that, the bats went away and back to sleep. The Under Guppy then introduced himself, and Gil asked if he was going to sing. He then said yes and started to sing the Cavern Realm Song.
The Under Guppy revealed that Molly and Gil were from the world above. They confirmed this, explaining their fall and Bubble Puppy’s perilous situation with the soldiers. Curious, the Under Guppy asked why the soldiers were targeting Bubble Puppy. Molly and Gil explained about the sun ring. The Under Guppy then revealed that his bats were nocturnal, relying on darkness for sleep. Without the sun, they would be deprived of rest. He guided Molly and Gil towards the Sun King’s castle. Meanwhile, Bubble Puppy, seeing the castle in the distance, persevered. He arrived the castle alone, only to find it very quiet because the Sun King and his soldiers were still asleep due to the spell.
Just then, a mysterious shadow was lurking behind him, and when Bubble Puppy turned around, he saw that it was the Night Wizard.
Molly, Gil, and the Under Guppy saw the castle. They continued on but were stopped because the Under Guppy had something for them, which was "The Hoodie of Invisibility." That meant that when they put it on, they would become invisible.
Footage showed that Bubble Puppy was locked in a small cage by the Night Wizard inside the castle. The Wizard was searching through a box, trying to get the ring off him. When Molly and Gil entered, they found the Night Wizard and the captured Bubble Puppy. They hid behind a door and almost got caught when a creak alerted the Wizard, but they managed to stay hidden.
They quickly came up with a plan. Gil will use the Hoodie of Invisibility to rescue Bubble Puppy, while Molly will try to wake the Sun King without being seen. The Night Wizard attempted to cheer up Bubble Puppy and remove the ring, but the puppy heard voices. He spotted Gil wearing the hoodie, who told him he was going to free him, just before disappearing as the Wizard turned around.
Meanwhile, Molly crept past the Wizard and hid behind the stairs, hoping to avoid detection. The Night Wizard changed tactics and used a feather to tickle Bubble Puppy, trying to make him take off the ring. This gave Molly a chance to reach the Sun King. Suddenly, the gate to Bubble Puppy's cage creaked open. It was Gil, still undetected by the Wizard, who was standing behind him. Gil quickly covered the Wizard's eyes with his hat and urged Bubble Puppy to run.
After removing the hat from his eyes, the Night Wizard saw Molly climbing up the stairs and demanded, "What are you doing here?!" as he charged toward her. Gil reappeared and quickly shouted, "Molly, look out!"
Molly tried to get away from the Wizard, but he caught up and blocked her way. He then said that if they thought they were going to wake up the Sun King, they wouldn't stand a chance. Just then, the wizard's army showed up and surrounded them. The sun was going down, and the wizard declared it was too late. He then tried to wake up the Sun King, telling him the sun would be setting forever. He then demanded Molly and Gil give him Bubble Puppy, but from out of nowhere, a voice shouted, "You leave our friends alone!" It turned out that the Flutter Guppies had arrived, and the Puppy Flutter Guppy ordered the wizard to let them go. Then, the Snow Guppy appeared and declared, "And their little dog too!" The Under Guppy appeared with simple "hello." But the Night Wizard wouldn't give in, saying it's far too late to save the day and told his soldiers to seize them. The soldiers charged towards them, but two were chased by the Flutter Guppies, who transformed into butterflies. Another soldier was scared by the Snow Guppy, who transformed into a polar bear, and two more were chased by the Under Guppy's bats. Then, the Snow Guppy (as a polar bear) roared at the Night Wizard and chased him too.
Molly and Gil had a chance to get Bubble Puppy to the Sun King, but Raoul stopped them. Gil had an idea: he threw a lemon from the slushy stand to distract him. It worked, but the sun was setting quickly. Molly and Gil rushed to the throne and tried to wake the Sun King, but nothing worked because he was under a sleeping spell. The Night Wizard announced it was "time for night-night," then ran away when the Snow Guppy chased him.
Soon, Gil realized he needs to point the ring at the sun to make it rise and break the sleeping spell. Without wasting time, they raced upstairs to the balcony where they can see the sun, but the Night Wizard told his army to stop them. When they reached the balcony, Gil aimed the ring at the sun while the soldiers hurried up the stairs to stop them. As the ring began to shine, the commander shouted, "Stop in the name of night..." Suddenly, the ring shone a blinding light, forcing the soldiers to close their eyes. As the sun rose, daylight returned, breaking the spell and upsetting the wizard. Raoul then fell asleep, and the Under Guppy explained that possums are nocturnal animals.
Everything soon returned to normal. The Sun King and his army woke from the spell thanks to the rising sun, much to Molly and Gil's relief. They ran over to him, and he noticed the ring around Bubble Puppy's neck. He freed the puppy and slipped the ring back onto his finger.
Curious about what had happened, he then saw the Night Wizard crying. "Is that the Night Wizard?" he asked. "Yeah," Gil replied. "He took your ring." Molly added that he wanted it to be nighttime forever. Shocked, the Sun King went to comfort the wizard, who explained his plan to create permanent nighttime, lamenting that their efforts had ruined it. He cried that everyone would now enjoy "fun in the sun."
The Sun King reassured the Night Wizard, telling him that night would soon fall, and then day would return. "What's so great about daytime anyway?" the Night Wizard asked. "Are you kidding? Daytime is awesome!" Gil exclaimed. The Snow Guppy added, "You can go sledding!" The Purple Flutter Guppy said, "And the flowers can bloom!" and the Blue Flutter Guppy chimed in, "And the animals can play!"
"And you can play outside with your friends!" Molly told him.
The Night Wizard sadly replied that he didn't have any friends and began to cry again. Fortunately, Molly and the others told him they would be his friends. Gil, however, wasn't so sure due to the wizard's earlier actions of stealing the ring. After Molly looked at him intently, and Gil met her gaze, he decided to accept the offer and give the wizard another chance.
A very happy wizard now had lots of friends to play with and asked what they were going to do. The Sun King responded, "There's only one thing to do: line up and go outside." Everyone then began to sing the last song, "A Brand New Day!" During the song, the Night Wizard said, "What a wonderful day this was," and the Sun King thanked him, saying that he really enjoyed it. Then, one of the Night Wizard’s soldiers informed the Sun King that he was a little thirsty, and Molly and Gil had "customers" at the slushy stand. As the camera zoomed out, showing the map, the narrator said that with the Ring of the Sun returned to the Sun King, daytime was now saved forever. And forever would be told the legend of "The Puppy and the Ring."
After that, Bubble Puppy is then seen wearing the Hoodie of Invisibility in the final scene with the title card, and then he vanishes as the movie special comes to an end.
